Doctors have ordered Dirty Dancing star Patrick Swayze to cut out the cigarettes to aid his fight against pancreatic cancer.

Swayze, who was first diagnosed with the disease in January, has so far refused to quit. The star is notorious for his defiant nicotine habit: he once admitted to getting through a whopping three packs per day.

Despite early reports suggesting a bleak outlook for the star, his doctor George Fisher has said he’s “optimistic” about Patrick’s chances of a full recovery, adding that he’s “responding well” to treatment.

Texan-born Patrick, 55, has vowed to beat the disease and is continuing to work on various TV projects.

Tributes to the star continued to pour in yesterday. Ghost co-star Whoopi Goldberg blew him a kiss on US TV, saying: “When I won my Academy Award the only person I thanked was Patrick... because of how he said, I'm not making Ghost unless you put Whoopi Goldberg in it... Baby, as always, we want you to feel better. We'll talk soon I hope."

Get well soon, Patrick.
